Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)

It is required that all districts and schools make adequate yearly progress (AYP). This information is contained in the State Report Cards on districts and schools and published annually. In order for schools and local education agencies (LEA's) to make AYP. Each must:

  • Achieve an annual 95% participation rate in the required TCAP/Gateway accountability tests as a whole and for each student subgroup (Race, Ethnicity, Students with Disabilities, Limited English Proficient Students & Economically Disadvantaged Students):
  • Reach AYP objectives in reading/language arts and math as a whole and for each student subgroup: and
  • Reach annual measurable objectives in the additional indicator for all students:
High School - Annual Graduation Rate (60% of an entering class of freshmen must graduate within 4 years + 1 summer
Elementary and Middle School - Attendance Rate: 93%

In calculating AYP for student subgroups, 45 or more students must be calculated in each subgroup to assure high levels of reliability.

All schools, Title I and non-Title I, and LEA's which fail to meet annual measurable objectives in the same content area (math and reading/language arts) or the additional indicator (attendance rate or graduation rate) for two consecutive years will be identified as in improvement status or will move to the next improvement category. 20 U.S.C. 6316 (a)(1)(C)1.
